Fragments
Loomis Gallery, Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania – 2025
Fragments is a collection of artwork that represents elements of Palestinian culture and society that have been fragmented due to sociopolitical factors.
Fragments of a Home uses ceramic tiles from the Palestinian city of Hebron to explore the concept of home. Home is often seen as a place of stability and safety. In the Palestinian context, home is a vulnerable place easily broken by external factors. The carvings on the wood are inspired by Islamic geometric patterns. Specifically, the arch is modeled after the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem, and the motifs within the arches are stylized Arabic letters designed into 8-point star sacred geometry shapes.
Fragments of a Script re-imagines elements, sites, and places of significance in Palestinian culture through Arabic calligraphy, highlighting the tradition and beauty of Arabic typography. This work showcases digital calligraphy and typography traditions in a context that blends identity and heritage.
Fragments of Reality is a re-design of popular lifestyle magazine covers in a satirical tone to juxtapose sentiments of war/peace, comfort/distress, and media sensationalism/understated realities. The photographs featured on the prints were taken by journalist Ibraheem M. Lafi during the 2022 war on Gaza and are used here with his permission. He unfortunately passed away during the early months of the 2023 war on Gaza.
